  4.     In the music biz, platinum is the most important color, and
  5. Vivid, the debut album by LIVING COLOUR, comes in that shade. "It
  6. took almost a year for the album to get any real attention," says
  7. VERNON REID, who founded the New York City-based band. Now the
  8. group, including WILL CALHOUN, MUZZ SKILLINGS and lead singer COREY
  9. GLOVER, has become the first black rock band to find mainstream
  10. acceptance since the breakup of SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE in the
  11. '70s. Its single, Cult of Personality, is zooming up the charts and
  12. burning up MTV. "Why would four young blacks do something
  13. completely defined as a white thing?" asks Reid, and then answers
  14. himself. "We don't have to be certain things to be a rock-'n-roll
  15. band." But why spell color with a u? "It just looked so mysterious.
  16. All that falls flat in London, where everything with color has a
  17. u. But here it does stand out." Vividly.
